Ear Training Scales

PET has a good selection of the more commmonly used scales ranging from the major scale to scales used in jazz improvisation such as the altered scale. Scales can be performed either ascending only, descending only or both ascending and descending in any of three registers (high, medium or low).

Top tips for practising scales with PET

* Practise scales that are currently relevant to you. Example: if you are currently practising major, and harmonic & melodic minors on your instrument you'll probably get more benefit from using PET to practise these than from other

* Use the 'show me help' function to learn the 'formula' for the scales you are practising.

* Select a single scale, then set 'hands-free' mode and a predictable root movement pattern such as cyclic (cycle of 5ths). You can then play along with PET using your instrument - this will help you fix the sound of the scale in your head as well as forcing you to learn the scale in all 12 keys!
